A main entrance carries more weight — literally and visually — than almost any other opening in a home or commercial project. It's usually the first thing a visitor interacts with, and it needs to look considered while still functioning perfectly every single day. For an entrance specifically, the choice usually comes down to three mechanisms: pivot, fold, or slide.

Pivot doors: the architectural statement

A pivot door is a single, often oversized panel that rotates on a concealed floor and head pivot set inward from the edge, rather than swinging on side hinges. Because the weight is balanced around that offset pivot point rather than carried entirely by hinges along one edge, a pivot door can handle a much larger, heavier single panel than a hinged door of the same size — which is exactly why it reads as a grand, architectural entrance rather than "just a door."

It's the right choice when the entrance itself is meant to be a feature — a single striking panel, minimal visible hardware, and a deliberate sense of weight and quality every time it swings open.

Bifold doors: the flexible opening

A bifold entrance makes sense when you want the option of a fully open frontage some of the time — a café or showroom entrance, or a villa entry that also serves as a wide opening onto a courtyard — while still having a normal single "traffic door" panel for everyday use. It's a more versatile mechanism than a pivot door, but it doesn't carry the same singular, architectural presence.

Sliding doors: the practical, high-traffic choice

For commercial entrances with frequent foot traffic, or automatic sensor-operated entries, a sliding mechanism is usually the most practical — no swing radius to account for on either side, smooth operation under frequent use, and (with automation) hands-free access. It trades the architectural drama of a pivot door for pure day-to-day function.

Matching the mechanism to the entrance

  • Want a single, striking, architectural panel? Pivot.
  • Want the option to fully open the frontage sometimes, and use a normal door the rest of the time? Bifold.
  • Running a high-traffic commercial entrance, or want automatic operation? Sliding.

Whichever mechanism suits the project, the same standard applies across Rigor's range: thermally broken aluminium, glazing sized to the opening, and a 10-year warranty on hardware and workmanship. Tell us how the entrance is actually used day to day, and we'll recommend the mechanism that fits — not just the one that photographs best.
